HOW TO MAKE TURKISH COFFEE?

In the historical journey of coffee, Turkish coffee holds a special place. Turkish coffee is a reflection of our culture, an essential element of conversations and sharing. The exquisite flavor of finely ground coffee beans and the magic of foam dancing in the cezve prove that preparing this special drink is an art.

In this article, we will explore the intricacies of making Turkish coffee perfectly. From the traditional cezve method to modern coffee machines, and even brewing methods with sand and ember, here are the details for capturing the unique flavor of Turkish coffee with each method.

How to Grind Coffee Beans for Turkish Coffee?

Very finely ground coffee is also known as powdered grinding. This method, suitable for Turkish coffees, eliminates any particles. Although the process takes a long time with manual hand grinders, you can grind coffee beans freshly with either traditional or electric grinders.

Tips for Making Frothy Turkish Coffee

The fundamental rule for frothy coffee is to use freshly ground coffee. If you cannot find freshly ground coffee, a newly opened coffee package can also yield good results. Remember to store opened coffee packages in a cool, dry, and odorless place. This will help preserve the flavor and foam.

Properly balancing the coffee and water ratio is also important. You can use 2 teaspoons of coffee for a standard cup and bring the water level to lip height. This way, you can achieve the right ratio and get a frothy coffee.

After placing the ingredients in the cezve, we recommend stirring slowly and gently for up to 30 seconds. Being hasty and stirring vigorously can hinder the foam. Using low heat during cooking is also important. This prevents the coffee from swelling rapidly and ensures a slow cook, resulting in a more delicious and frothy outcome.

Be careful when pouring the coffee into cups. Slowly pour the remaining coffee in the cezve into the cups, being careful not to pour too quickly from the middle. Also, note that using cold water is effective for frothy Turkish coffee.

How to Make Turkish Coffee in a Cezve?

As the first step, add the measured drinking water with a cup to the cezve. Add 2 teaspoons of coffee (6 g) for each cup and optionally, you can add sugar. It is recommended to mix the ingredients before placing them in the cezve to better integrate the flavors. Therefore, stir the coffee for a few seconds before putting the cezve on the stove. However, avoid stirring again after putting it on the stove. Cook the coffee over low heat, then distribute the foam into the cups after a while. Cook the remaining coffee for one more boil and pour it into the cups carefully. Now, Turkish coffee is ready!

Coffee and Sugar Ratio

Turkish coffee should be prepared individually according to everyone's taste. Asking how your guest prefers their coffee is a courteous gesture. Turkish coffee consumption is generally known as plain, slightly sweet, medium sweet, or sweet.

For plain Turkish coffee, you should not use sugar. Freshly ground coffee and the water in your cup are sufficient for a perfect plain Turkish coffee.

For those who prefer slightly sweet Turkish coffee, you can add a sugar cube to the cezve along with the coffee.

For those who prefer medium sweet Turkish coffee, adding 1.5 sugar cubes or 1 sugar cube and 1 heaping teaspoon of powdered sugar to the cezve with the coffee is sufficient.

For those who prefer sweet Turkish coffee, adding 2 sugar cubes and 1 heaping teaspoon of sugar to the cezve with the coffee is enough to achieve the desired consistency.

How to Make Ember Turkish Coffee?

Ember Turkish coffee stands out with a different cooking technique than classic Turkish coffee. While traditional Turkish coffee is cooked on the stove, ember Turkish coffee goes through a special cooking process on the ember, adding a unique flavor to the coffee.

When making ember Turkish coffee, the coffee slowly cooks over the fire. Since the ember does not provide as intense heat as the fire itself, the heat gradually increases. Thanks to this special technique, heat is distributed evenly. Since the ember does not provide heat from a single point, it wraps around the bottom and surroundings of the cezve, allowing the coffee to cook evenly and achieve a special flavor.

How to Serve Turkish Coffee?

The traditional presentation features of Turkish coffee are not only aesthetic but also crucial for achieving the correct coffee flavor. In the coffee-drinking ritual, water comes with coffee, not after coffee. A sip of water is taken before coffee, not after. Bringing water to the coffee is served as a courtesy. Taking a sip of water before drinking coffee cleanses the palate, allowing you to taste the coffee correctly. Sweet snacks such as chocolate and Turkish delight in presentations can be consumed during or after coffee, depending on preference.
